Non-invasive Blood Alcohol Sensor for Emergency Room Applications

Because of the drawbacks and limitations of existing alcohol and drugs of abuse intoxication sensors, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse are seeking innovative and improved sensors for rapid, non-invasive alcohol and drug intoxication measurement in emergency rooms. In collaboration with Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC) Emergency Medicine Department, IOS is developing a new technique for saliva-based measurements of alcohol and drugs of abuse in emergency rooms. The analyzer under development will deliver quantified measurements with the level of accuracy required in emergency rooms without the need for active patient interaction, or fallible visual assessment, and will therefore contribute to rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
