IOS researchers have developed cutting-edge technologies, including fiber optic-based sensors for pressure, temperature, electromagnetic fields, and a wide variety of chemicals; acoustic emission sensors; advanced signal and image processing systems; specialty light sources; nonlethal weapons; and nondestructive visual and laser ultrasonic inspection systems.

Applying our laser ultrasound technology to the automotive industry, IOS is developing an innovative real-time inspection system for inspecting the adhesive bonds used in assembling automotive body panels. In highly promising preliminary studies, IOS research has demonstrated the feasibility of single-side inspection for mapping the adhesive, measuring adhesive thickness, and measuring bond strength by applying laser ultrasonic techniques to inspect adhesive bonds, in real time, during automotive body manufacture and assembly.

Recognizing the demand and potential for hydrogen sensing, IOS also develops sensors and instrumentation for hydrogen gas detection needs in various industrial sectors, including the automotive, aerospace, and power generation industries.
